I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,and it was easier to wash aprons than dresses. And they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the Fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

Breakfast Casserole:
Ingredients:
6 slices bread, cubed
1 pound sausage, browned, drained
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
8 each eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon, salt
pepper to taste
Preparation:Cube bread and place evenly in greased 9x13 pan or baking dish. Sprinkle evenly with sausage and cheese. Mix eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour over ingredients in pan. May cover and chill overnight. (if left overnight, remove from refrigerator 15 minutes before baking). Bake 45 minutes at 325 degrees or until set. Cut into squares to serve. Serves8 to 10

Recipe for the week- Stuffed turkey Burgers

Stuffed Turkey burgers:
Ingredients
1 1/4 pounds lean ground turkey breast
1/2 cup chopped roasted red peppers
1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
1/4 teaspoons salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Divide turkey into 4 equal sized rounds. Make 2 equal sized patties out of each round so you have 8 patties total. Sprinkle 4 of the patties with 2 tablespoons red peppers and cheese, and top with remaining patties, working the turkey around the edges to seal burgers closed. Season with salt and a few grinds of pepper. Grill or broil until cooked through, about 5 minutes per side.

Recipe for the week- Southwest Salsa

I got tangled in an email recipe exchange and this one was sent to me.
SOUTHWEST SALSA
2 cans drained black beans1 can drained whole-kernel corn
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
juice of 6 fresh limes (bottled lime juice just isn't as good)
6 T. olive oil
1/4 cup minced red onion
1/4 cup minced green onion
ground cumin to taste
chopped tomatoes, or diced pineapple optional
Mix first 8 ingredients in large bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate until cold. Can be stored this way for several days, but the punch of the lime and cilantro is best on the first day. This is great on grilled chicken or fish. And off course with your favorite chips!

This is one of my favorites from Kraft. It is really easy to make and light. Great for a summer evening! I would serve it with a nice pinot gris. Enjoy

8 oz. linguine, uncooked
3/4 cup prepared GOOD SEASONS Zesty Italian Dressing Mix for Fat Free Dressing, divided
2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 can (14 oz.) artichoke hearts, drained, quartered
1 lb. uncooked cleaned large shrimp
1 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
1/4 cup KRAFT Grated Parmesan Cheese
COOK pasta as directed on package.
MEANWHILE, heat 1/2 cup of the dressing in large skillet on medium heat. Stir in mushrooms, onions and artichokes; cook 3 min. or until onions are crisp-tender, stirring occasionally. Add shrimp and parsley; stir. Cook 2 min. or until shrimp are pink and vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.
DRAIN pasta; return to pot. Add shrimp mixture and remaining 1/4 cup dressing; toss lightly. Sprinkle with cheese.

Second New Recipe for the Week- Roasted Vegetables Pasta Salad

Here you are another new recipe! This one I will make Saturday to go with ribs at the cabin!

1 medium yellow squash (about 8 oz.), quartered, sliced
1 small red pepper, cut into strips
1/3 cup KRAFT Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing, divided
1/4 cup KRAFT Real Mayo Mayonnaise
2-1/4 cups cavatappi pasta or other small pasta, cooked, drained and cooled
3/4 cup small fresh basil leaves, divided
1/4 tsp. each: salt and black pepper

PREHEAT oven to 400°F. Toss squash and red peppers with 2 Tbsp. of the dressing. Spread onto baking sheet.
BAKE 20 to 25 min. or until crisp-tender; cool.
MIX mayo and remaining dressing in large bowl. Add pasta, roasted vegetables, 1/2 cup of the basil and the seasonings; mix lightly. Serve immediately. Or, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Top with the remaining basil just before serving.

The word boycott entered the English language during the Irish "Land War" and is derived from the name of Captain Charles Boycott, the estate agent of an absentee landlord, the Earl Erne, in County Mayo, Ireland, who was subject to social ostracism organized by the Irish Land League in 1880. In September that year protesting tenants demanded from Boycott a substantial reduction in their rents. He not only refused but also evicted them from the land. Charles Stewart Parnell, in his Ennis Speech proposed that, rather than resorting to violence, everyone in the locality should refuse to deal with him. Despite the short-term economic hardship to those undertaking this action, Boycott soon found himself isolated—his workers stopped work in the fields and stables, as well as the house. Local businessmen stopped trading with him, and the local postman refused to deliver mail.
The concerted action taken against him meant that Boycott was unable to hire anyone to harvest the crops in his charge. Eventually 50 Orangemen from Cavan and Monaghan volunteered to harvest his crops. They were escorted to and from Claremorris by one thousand policemen and soldiers—this despite the fact that Boycott's complete social ostracism meant that he was actually in no danger of being harmed. Moreover, this protection ended up costing far more than the harvest was worth. After the harvest, the "boycott" was successfully continued. Within weeks Boycott's name was everywhere. It was used by The Times in November 1880 as a term for organized isolation. According to an account in the book “The Fall of Feudalism in Ireland” by Michael Davitt, the term was coined by Fr. New Recipe - Cookie Salad

COOKIE SALAD:

INGREDIENTS

2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
2 cups buttermilk
12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
2 (11 ounce) cans mandarin oranges, drained
1/2 (11.5 ounce) package fudge stripe cookies

DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, mix together the pudding mix and the buttermilk. Fold in the whipped topping. Mix in the pineapple chunks and mandarin oranges. Chill until ready to serve. Crush cookies and mix in just before serving.

Recipe of the Week- Almond Bars

1 cup butter

2 cups flour

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Filling

1 8 oz. cream cheese

2 eggs

1/2 cup sugar

1 tsp almond extract

Frosting

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 T. milk (or more if needed)

1 tsp. almond extract

Combine crust and press into 9 x 13 pan. Bake for 20 minutes at 350

Combine filling and pour over baked crust for 15-20 minutes

Combine frosting and spread over cooled bars

Rule Of Thumb

This is what I learned yesterday! Everyday is a new day and an opportunity to learn something new!

Origin
The 'rule of thumb' has been said to derive from the belief that English law allowed a man to beat his wife with a stick so long as it is was no thicker than his thumb. In 1782, Judge Sir Francis Buller is reported as having made this legal ruling and in the following year James Gillray published a satirical cartoon attacking Buller and caricaturing him as 'Judge Thumb'. The cartoon shows a man beating a fleeing woman and Buller carrying two bundles of sticks. The caption reads "thumbsticks - for family correction: warranted lawful!"
It seems that Buller was hard done by. He was notoriously harsh in his punishments and had a reputation for arrogance, but there's no evidence that he ever made the ruling that he is infamous for. Edward Foss, in his authoritative work The Judges of England, 1870, wrote that, despite a searching investigation, "no substantial evidence has been found that he ever expressed so ungallant an opinion".

Mushroom Hunting

OK so one of our favorite pass times is hunting mushrooms. We just love it! It is our time to spend with family. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins come along and we have a great time. Some years are better than others. However we always have a good time. Whether our bounty is a plenty or not. I do have to admit that every year is different. Some years we find huge ones, but few. Some years we find lots of little ones...This year however we have found teeny tiny ones and huge ones. People have lots of theories about weather and soil etc....I personally do not know why some years are better or why in some areas all of a sudden there are tons. I do know that when the violets come out so will the mushrooms. I also know that they usually start popping out early May. Oh and yes I do know they are delicious!

New Recipe for this week 5-5-2009

So every week I try at least one new recipe. Most weeks I try two new ones. But this week is a crazy week so I am only trying out a new one. "Bacon Wrapped Chicken"

Ingredients:6 boneless skinless chicken breasts halves
1 (8 oz) cartons chive and onion cream cheese
6 slices of bacon salt (to taste)2 tablespoons butter
Cooking Instructions:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Between 2 sheets of wax paper with a mallet flatten chicken breasts to ½” thickness.
Step 2: Spread 3 tablespoons of cream cheese over each chicken breast. Then Dot with butter and season with salt. Wrap with bacon and stick a toothpick through the rolled chicken breast to hold it together. Roll up and stick a toothpick through to hold it together.
Step 3: Place seam side down in 13 x 9 baking pan. Bake, uncovered at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until juices run clear.
Step 4: Turn on the broiler and broil six inches from the heat for 5 minutes or until the bacon is crisp.

I just love it when I go to the store and see that my new items have sold. I just loved the new role play sets by Melissa and Doug when I saw them. They are perfect for little ones who like to play pretend. They are packed with great detail and exciting accessories. Each costume comes with it's won name tag so that you can personalise the costume for your child. Yesterday the veterinarian sold. It included a puppy patient, a jacket, a mask, cap, stethoscope with sound for F/X, bandage and syringe. Whoever the child is that will be getting this is lucky! Are You Kidding?

OK my hubby came to my office to ask if I had designed his tee shirts yet. OK i just made the man penne with shrimp, asparagus and squash, made a "what I think fabulous" salad, made a pumpkin cheesecake, worked for him all day at the office, helped kids with homework, did 3 loads of laundry, posted recipe on my blog, cleaned the kitchen. No I did not! "Why not what did you do all day?" He asked. Are you kidding? Anyway I have to go price some new inventory. Kids Spy kits. I just got them. Really cool rear view spy sunglasses and finger print kits.

No Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake

So I came home from a long day on quickbooks and decided I needed to clean my kitchen and make a little something sweet. You know I deserved it. I worked all day for my hubby. I help him at his new business that he started. So here it is:

No Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake with Graham crackers (i had gingersnap cookies)
1 (11 oz.) pkg. no-bake cheesecake (including filling and graham cracker crumbs for crust)1 c. canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)1 to 2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice Whipped cream
Follow package directions to make crust, but use a 9 inch square pan. Save some of the crumbs and use as a garnish on top of completed cheesecake.
For Filling: Pour 1 cup cold milk in a bowl; add the pumpkin and spice. Beat vigorously with a large wire whisk until well blended. Pour filling into pan on top of crust. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Refrigerate overnight to allow filling to set. Cut into squares, then remove from pan with a spatula. Top with whipped cream.

Summer Camps or buy them lots of toys..

OK so here I am this morning thinking "Holly Cow" my kids get out of school for summer break in less than a month. Crap! You see the problem is I need to find a sitter or a camp for them twice a week. But it is so expensive. If I get a sitter they usually go to our country club and play all day well supervised. But because of the economy and the lay off in my family we have had no income since January. Therefor No country club, no cleaning lady, no cable, the list goes on....
So what to do, what to do?
Anyway let me take this opportunity to talk about the YMCA. Wow they have gone up in price. They do offer really cool weekly camps but by the time you pay for multiple kids you could send one to college.
Maybe I will take them to work with me and let them play with my inventory. Which would be fun. Until something breaks. Except with these new toys that I carry that are good for indoor and outdoor. I really do recommend these for moms of boys. I am a mother of boys and I let them play with these inside my house. Now my friends that know me are probably shocked. I clean all the time and organize all the time. So to let my kids play inside is new for them....But you should try it out. The Zoomarang is an easy and fun boomerang. The Airbow shotz has been the best seller at No Girls Allowed. It is a dart and bow contraption that is well prices and so easy to use. I love the Hot Rocketz. All you need is your finger to let these rockets fly about...Fun stuff. Check them out!
Anyway after all this I still do not know what to do for my kids this summer.....

Fabulous! My two new recipes of the week.

Ok so you don't know me YET! But people who do not me know that I try two new recipes a week. So here they are and they were both delicious. The burger was flavorful and moist. The salad was crisp and fresh. Try them out and tell me what you think.

Stuffed Turkey Burgers by Ellie Krieger

Ingredients
1 1/4 pounds lean ground turkey breast
1/2 cup chopped roasted red peppers
1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
1/4 teaspoons salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Divide turkey into 4 equal sized rounds. Make 2 equal sized patties out of each round so you have 8 patties total. Sprinkle 4 of the patties with 2 tablespoons red peppers and cheese, and top with remaining patties, working the turkey around the edges to seal burgers closed. Season with salt and a few grinds of pepper. Grill or broil until cooked through, about 5 minutes per side.

Orange, Radish and Mint Salad

Ingredients
4 navel oranges
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
8 radishes, halved and thinly sliced
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, torn
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Cut the top and bottom off of each orange. Stand the orange on 1 end on a cutting board and, following the curve of the fruit, cut away the skin and pith of the orange. Cut each orange section out of its pith.
In a medium bowl toss together the orange sections, onion, radishes, and mint leaves. Drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper.

OK so here I am. I have to admit I have no clue what I am doing here. So for my first blog I will share one of my favorite quotes.

Speaking of Joan Rivers. I just love the show Celebrity Apprentice. Can those Rivers ladies just get over it? I wonder if Joan will be back? Oooooh cannot wait for tomorrow night to find out!
